As we mentioned in our previous update, the 81st World Home Cooking Meeting – Ecuadorian Cuisine Edition was held on June 14th, organized by the Ushiku City International Association’s Cooking Division. Tanya S., our founder, was invited as a guest lecturer to share and teach about the traditional food of her home country.
The event was a wonderful opportunity to introduce the public to a delicious selection of representative Andean Ecuadorian dishes. Tanya demonstrated how to prepare locro de papa (a traditional potato soup), llapingachos (Ecuadorian-style potato patties), and a traditional drink called Quaker, made with oatmeal, pineapple, and cinnamon.
Approximately 30 people of all ages and backgrounds participated—most of them Japanese, along with a few international guests from Peru and China. Thanks to the many volunteers in the Cooking Division, much of the preparation was done in advance, allowing the event to run smoothly.
After a brief introduction of the event and the guest lecturer, there was a 30-minute cooking explanation. Then, participants were divided into eight groups, each guided by a volunteer. All the cooking was completed by 1:00 p.m., just in time for lunch.
As everyone enjoyed the meal, Tanya shared some interesting facts about Ecuador’s geography and history, helping participants learn more about the country’s rich culture. There was also time for questions, showing that the audience was engaged, curious, and enthusiastic.
