The Chancellor of Ecuador, Gabriela Sommerfeld, made an official visit to Japan to strengthen the diplomatic relationship between the two countries. On the afternoon of July 23rd, the Embassy of Ecuador in Japan organized a meeting between the Chancellor and members of the Ecuadorian community living in Japan.
Before the Chancellor’s speech, there were a few minutes during which guests at the Embassy and online participants could briefly introduce themselves. Tanya Saga, Active Life’s Director, was invited but could not attend the event. Instead, Pia Molina joined online and presented Active Life’s mission—to serve as a bridge between the local and foreign communities through language teaching and other activities that bring people together— as well as its ongoing initiatives in Japan.

The Chancellor gave a speech about the services the Ministry of Foreign Affairs provides —and aims to provide— to the foreign community, the current situation in Ecuador, the circumstances of Ecuadorians in other countries, and her purpose for visiting Japan, with an emphasis on social support, security, and economic relations. After her remarks, there was a short Q&A session. One important topic discussed was whether the Government of Ecuador was willing to support cultural activities in Japan.
About 16 Ecuadorians attended the event in person at the Embassy, and 8 joined online. In total, there are around 400 Ecuadorians living in Japan, including students, academics, and professionals working in various fields.
